On the opposite bank of the river Nidd is 'Mother Shiptons Petrifying Well'

Mother Shipton is often called England's most famous Prophetess. She lived 500 years ago during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As she grew older, her prophetic visions became known and feared throughout England.

One of our favourites is that she foretold that 'Around the world thoughts shall fly In the twinkling of an eye.'
